In the ad ¨ Straya ¨ there were many representations of Australians as cultured people. Many Australians strive to be successful in sports, some examples are cricket, netball, football and surfing. I agree with this because throughout our history sport was one of the most important things that brought Aussies together. The camera angle used for the Australian Netball team was medium shot because they wanted the whole team to be in the camera, the shot angle of the girl surfing was a close up as she came out of the water the expression on her face was that she was very relaxed and loves the water. At the end of the ad many different people gathered at the Opera House to come together as Australians and as one.
Mateship
The representations of Australians in the ad “ Straya “ is that we are a bit of larrikins, love to hangout with family and friends. The notion of that is we treat people equally regardless of race, gender, creed or religion. Most Australians show mateship when they are out for “ A fresh cold beer ” quoted from the the ad, having barbies with mates and playing some aussie games such as cricket in the backyard.
Kevin Rudds Speech
The representations of Australia’s Indigenous peoples in Kevin Rudd’s apology speech was that he spoke about the mistreatment of the indigenous people and those who were taken away from their families also known as the “ Stolen Generation. ” The Stolen Generation was when young Indigenous Australians were forcibly removed from their families from the late 1800’s to the 1970’s and the light coloured ones were placed with white families.
Kevin Rudd used very emotive words and paused on strong words for more effect. Some examples of the strong words were, “ indignity and degradation thus inflicted on a proud people“. The government back in the 1900’s were very dictatorial towards the Indigenous Australians because they thought that they knew what was best for them unlike the Parliament of Australia now. It has changed since the early 1900’s because they “respectfully request the apology to be received in the spirit as part of the healing of the nation”. Kevin Rudd wants all Australians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous to close a gap that lies between us and turn a new page in our nations history. I agree with Kevin Rudd that we should move on and not forget about the past but just live life and look forward on what is to come.
The Real Australian Identity
The real Australian Identity to me is someone who is hardworking, good to mates, reliable, friendly, fair dinkum and someone who enjoys being outside. Some examples of how we are hardworking, reliable etc is that when a natural disaster happens everyone chips in and does their part to help each other. Over the past few years I personally believe that Australia has become less racist, a more open and multicultural nation.
We accept other cultures and religions, and some communities put on programs to help them to learn the Australian language and skills they need to live in the community.

What do you think is the major difference between how Australians are being portrayed now compared to how they were portrayed in the late 1800’s?
Straya
ReplyDeleteIn Straya there are clips showing sports suggesting that Australia loves their sports but they still like to celebrate after a big win and not be so serious. In the clip cricket, netball, surfing and football are represented with people and scenes well known for the sport. Even the Prime Minister Bob Hawke was shown celebrating after Australia's win in the America's Cup. I think this is a true representative of Australians and their sports even more so because throughout history sports has brought Australians together.
In Straya there are indigenous Australians and kids from all over the world holding their flag in Australia showing Australia is one of the most multicultural counties in the world. They also included aboriginals performing their traditional dance in front of a crowed. I believe this is a true representative of Australian culture.
Crocodile Dundee
In Crocodile Dundee towards the start Mick Dundee is very sexist. In the past the stereotype of men in Australia is that they did not think women were capable to work or survive in the bush, men would not allow women in public bars. For example Mick Dundee said, “Normally it will take a day but cause your a Sheila and all its going to take two days”. This represents that women are slower and not capable to work as quickly as men. I think that it has improved to this day as more women are working in the bush and are allowed to drink in a public bar but still is evident to this day in rural areas.
Another representation in Crocodile Dundee is the bushmen. The bushmen can have lots of fun and a good laugh but when it comes down to business its all serious and they get the job done in a resalable time. This is still evident today in most hard working man and woman, they can get the job done in time and still have good fun and a laugh. Therefore I think this is a very true representative of Australians.
Question
What is your opinion on contetery day sexiset? This is well shown in crocodile dundee when he justice sue for being a women.
My opinion on contemporary day sexists is that we have changed over time but people still critise because of their gender.

Mateship is very well known in Australia because everyone likes to have a party together and have a beer. Some examples from the film is that mateship went back to the 1700’s while they were finding gold, going on a waterslide and having a water fight. Some camera angles shown in this film would be extreme long shot of the Sydney Harbour Bridge at the start of the film, a medium shot of the man that is cooking meat on the barbeque, a close up of the men that have discovered a mineral deposit. I believe that Australian’s are very fun and love to party also are easy to be friends with.
Sport
In the ad ‘Straya’ there were some representations of Australia as a sporting nation. Sport is celebrated a lot in Australia because we love playing it and when we win a game we dive on each other. Some examples from the clip are: We are rough when playing football, also are good at running especially Cathy Freeman and Australians are also immature because our personality is more enjoyable than other cultures.. Some camera angles from the ‘Straya’ clip are Long shot of the person going into the beach at the start, High angle shot when the man is tackling the other teammate and Medium shot of the girls diving on each other when they won a game. I believe that Australians love sport and are always playing sport even if they are not appropriate when playing sport they love to play around.
Tru Blue
In the song ‘True Blue’, John Williamson used a lot of slang in the verses and Australians are represented as being very laidback and the song lilts a lot which means the rising and falling of his voice throughout the song. A representation of Australian slang is “ You’ve knocked off for a smoko” which is basically saying that you have gone for afternoon tea which is also an abbreviation. Some examples of colloquial language in True Blue are they are just saying typical things Australian say. There are also using rhetorical questions and symbolism, some examples of a rhetorical question is “Hey True Blue, can you bear the load?”. So True Blue is all about rhetorical questions and slang but it is meaning that can they handle Australia, its tough landscape and animals. Also John is asking a lot of rhetorical questions but he is making other cultures think about a True Blue.

Straya paragraph History
In Straya, there were some representations of Australians as being hardworking throughout history. The history is a big part of our culture as we came to Australia as convicts and worked very hard and lived off the land. Australians these days aren't scared to get in and get the job done. There were historical images showed and modern machinery shown. This is a valid representation of a contemporary Australian. In my opinion, I believe that most Australians are hardworking.
Straya paragraph Mateship
In Straya there were some representations of Australians as a nation which holds mateship with high esteem. Mateship is very important in Australia. In Australia, we are all close and stick up for one another. It is important to us as Australians that we stick together as mates. In my opinion, we are never scared to help a mate out. In this ad, it showed that mateship is important. In my opinion, this ad is a fantastic ad because it shows what Aussies are like and the great Landscapes, the animals and in general it shows what the typical Aussie is like. This ad shows a good representation of Australia.
Crocodile Dundee Indigenous History
In Crocodile Dundee, there were representations of Australians. Australia is a nation which holds the (indigenous history they hold the history in high regard ). The indigenous history is a very important part of Australian history. In this film, it has shown how the indigenous people lived off the land by eating bush food/animals They had eaten a snake and a goanna in this movie. At the Bora ring they danced and only men were allowed there and women had to stay away because the dance was only for men and their boy children to celebrate manhood. In this ad, it showed that the Indigenous history is important. In my opinion, this film is good as it shows the Indigenous history well.
Crocodile Dundee Typical Bushman
In Crocodile Dundee there were representations of the typical Australian bushman. In the film it showed that they ate bush food, bush animals, they swam in the billabongs to have a bath they also drank beer and were very sexist. In the bush, they would bath in billabongs where crocodiles would lurk and they ate goanna and snakes. The bushman is sexist saying “Well you're a Sheila so it will take longer than normal to get there”.P In my opinion this is a good representation of the Australian bushman.
My definition of a real Australian Identity
Australia has been described as ^ diverse and unique country. Australia is a very relaxed and laid back country whose people take no nonsense and just go with the flow. When interviewed citizens of Cloncurry the main qualities that were identified were hard working, Honest, Down to earth and very friendly. I agree with these points because as they are all true and represent the true Typical Australian identity.(can you give examples)

In Straya there were some representations of multicultural Australians. Australia has have never really had its own culture it has developed over the years after many people had migrated to Australia or come over as convicts. An example of this in the Straya clip is when the kids from different cultures held up their flags and the music said, “and we’re multicultural” the camera was also pointed down on them showing them smiling and happy to be Australians. Also the Indigenous Australians are our main culture, however, they only have a short section of dancing as their representation. I believe that, although Australian people did not start out multicultural, we have grown over many years and are now made up of many different cultures.
Sport-
Sport was one of the things that brought Australia together as a country in 1868. The cricket team was the first team Australia had as a country, surprisingly when it traveled to England it won. An example of sporting in the Straya clip is when they are playing cricket on Australia Day. I believe cricket and sporting is a big part of Australian culture and in the clip Prime Minister Bob Hawke was enjoying the cricket as well as the everyday Australian’s.
Crocodile Dundee
Multicultural-
In the film clip Crocodile Dundee the representations of multicultural Australians are shown throughout the Indigenous and English Australians. In Crocodile Dundee the Indigenous Australians are represented in a traditional and modernised way. An example of this representation is when Neville is walking through the bush and comes across Mick and Sue. Neville is walking to a corroboree, although he is wearing jeans and a watch. This example shows a traditional, but modernised Indigenous Australian. I believe this representation is a truthful representation of modernised Australia.
Mateship-
Mateship is friendship or companionship, it is mainly recognised between men by society. Mateship was shown in this movie only once although mateship is a big part of the Australian identity. The representation of mateship in Crocodile Dundee is when they are all in the pub having beers and they are playing jokes on each other. Also the only woman in the bar is the woman serving. This representation of mateship is pure Australian.
My Opinion Of Australian Identity
The real Australian identity is speaking slang, loving Australia, hardworking, laid back and honest. Also over many years I believe Australia has become less racist and more multicultural. They have also become accepting of other cultures because they have realised how big of a part they played in keeping Australia going. I believe these representations have been thoroughly portrayed throughout Straya and Crocodile Dundee.

ReplyDeleteIn most clips of Straya it is shown Australians love to party. The BBQ, playing backyard cricket, going to the beach, having water fights and running down the waterslide are ways for Australians to have fun especially in the heat or for celebrations. In the video clip Straya there's a few scenes showing Australians having a great time as they were happy with smiles on their faces, playing games, pretending to sing also the music was happy and upbeat. I believe that many Australians enjoy having parties and just having fun despite how hot it would be.
Numerous clips in Straya shows that Australians are very athletic and enjoy playing sport. All Australians are well known for playing cricket, AFL, football, soccer, tennis, netball, volleyball and so on and so forth. There are two examples, the first one is seeing people playing cricket and seeing Cathy Freemen running really fast, the second example which most people commonly know is seeing people playing sport on the tv. To sum up most Australians love to play sport.

In The Great Australian Dream it was shown that most traditional Australians own a paddock, wear cowboy clothes and are roping cattle. Australia is a hot place and because of this environment it can be easily seen to be a place where they can raise cattle and grow crops. If you see or listen to the Great Australian Dream most images show you grown men dressed up in cowboy hats, shirts and jeans while riding horses , also here in cloncurry we go Rodeos and that is when you see most people dressed up in cowboy gear and watch bull riding. Today it might be outdated but you can not deny that most authentic and true hearted Australians love to beat the heat.
Today’s generation of Australian kids and teenagers would be to wear lat caps, colorful shoes and would drink Coca Cola in other words they are being Americanized. This is because most of us kids would rather be shopping and looking their best (mostly girls) rather than being in the heat also most kids live in the cities and it’s the 21st century this what kids do these days. Examples of these are that shops filled with very swaggy clothes and mainly in the clip Great Australian Dream the kids are wearing flat caps, wearing outres and drinking Coca Cola. To sum up kids would not go and live in the heat instead they prefer living in luxury and just being Americanized.

They way I see Australians is that they are becoming more Americanized. This is due to the new technology which is available to teenagers as this influences them to buy outrageous clothes and gimmicks to just have a good time. The Example of this is firstly teenagers being crazy and out of control, secondly shops, as they sell these crazy gimmicks and finally the teenagers themselves. Overall the Australian generations only care about is having fun and making wild parties.

When we went to find out what people’s depiction of Australia is most residents of Cloncurry said they are hard working and true hearted, however I disagree. True, mostly older Australians are that but this is the 21st century and they aren’t like that anymore especially kids/teenagers. Also when I walk down the street I’m constantly seeing teenagers creating mischief and chaos. In the Great Australian dream and Straya they keep showing the footages on kids and teenagers are having more fun and less helping their community. Some people may agree or disagree but I'm confident that all are not hard working and not true hearted.

In the music clip ‘Straya’ there are many images of Australians playing sports. Many Australians strive in their sports and the most popular sports are cricket, football and netball. In the song Australians are looked on as not being very serious about their sports such as when we won the netball and the women were just tackling each other. Throughout Australian history sport has been a very important part as it is one of the things that brought Australia together as a nation when they made the first cricket team and went off to England and won.
In the music clip ’Straya’ there is a lot of our multicultural side shown such as when all of the children are standing with all of the flags of the different cultures that live in Australia. Also when all of the kids were standing on the rocks you could see many different cultures in that part of the clip. The representations that they have given to the cultural part of Australia are true as we do have many different cultures in our country. So in summary of the multicultural side of Australia the song represent us as a very multicultural country and it is being truthful.
Drovers Wife
In the story the ‘Drovers Wife’ it shows women in the outback as being tough and independent as in the story the husband has been gone for 6 months and she says that one time he was gone for 18 months. Also it says the she is sun browned which shows that women in the outback are always spending their time outside and doing all the work around the place while the men are away. The woman in the ‘Drovers Wife’ is shown to be protective of her children as she stays awake all night to make sure the snake doesn’t come out and when the boy says that he would “smash that bitch blinded snake” she tells him to stay away. In summary of the story the ‘Drovers Wife’ I believe it doesn’t represent the Australians properly as women out on stations will usually have their husbands with them but I do believe that it is true that the women out on properties are strong and can withstand most things.
Opinion
My opinion on the real Australian is that they are usually happy and will always do anything for their mates no matter what the consequences are. Also they will always do anything for you even if they have a bad history with you and will always help people in their community. We are are very laid back and relaxed as we don't take things too seriously.
